If your millennium fever takes a turn for the worse the morning after, don't worry because help is only a store cupboard away. Believe it or not, one of the best remedies for a hangover is a spoonful of honey. So what's the secret?

Drinking alcohol can leave us feeling tired, lethargic and in need of a quick burst of energy. Honey is an excellent source of instant energy and is gentle on the stomach, as it contains a mix of natural sugars (such as glucose and fructose) which is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream. Fructose is also known to speed up the oxidation of alcohol by the liver, acting as a 'sobering' agent.

So for a truly natural pick-me-up to help combat the effects of the night before, follow this simple recipe:

  • 30ml (2tbsp) runny honey
  • 150ml (_pint) orange juice
  • 150ml (_pint) natural yogurt

Place all the ingredients in a liquidizer and blend until smooth. Pour into a tall glass.
This recipe makes enough for two servings.

You can maximise the benefits of this remedy by drinking a glass before you go out celebrating to help ease that 'morning after' feeling the next day.

The medicinal effects of honey have long been recognised and honey in healing has been used for over 5,000 years. Find out more about this amazing ingredient during National Honey Week, from 31 January to 6 February 2000.
