UK consumers spend approximately £5 billion per year on beauty cosmetics and toiletries(1) even though 98% of them believe beauty products are overpriced, and 68% have no idea what the ingredients in the products actually are(2).

The study of 2,000 men and women, commissioned by the Honey Association for National Honey Week (13-19 February), also found that 59% of respondents were more likely to buy a branded product than a natural product. Surprisingly, it is men who came first in the natural stakes, with 47% agreeing that they would be more likely to buy a natural product compared to 38% of women.

Bharti Vyas, beauty advisor to the celebs believes, "Many consumers automatically buy into a brand because they trust and recognise it. They think the more money they spend, the better the results, but this isn't always the most effective choice.

"Take honey, for example. Honey has been used for centuries as a natural remedy and beauty ingredient. For a fraction of the price of an expensive beauty cream, consumers could purchase a pot of honey and a few kitchen cupboard essentials and make their own natural beauty treatment."

Bharti Vyas has developed a series of cost effective recipes to celebrate National Honey Week. Quick and easy recipes include the Healing Mask for Spots (perfect for the cash short teenager), which includes every-day ingredients such as honey, sea salt and turmeric, and aims to heal spots faster, leaving no scar tissue. Other recipes include a Mask for Excess Hair and a Natural Home-Made quick Face Lift.
